The APSU men’s golf team competed at the 22nd APSU Intercollegiate tournament Monday at the Clarksville Country Club, placing second as a team with a team score seven-under 569.

Three Governors made the top five as individuals and the lowest team round of the day with a ten-under 278 in the second round. Two teams of Governors competed in a field of eight total teams and two unattached individuals.

APSU’s first team, comprised of junior Reece Britt, freshman Seth Smith, graduate student Morgan Robinson, fifth year Jakob Falk Schollert, redshirt junior Logan Spurrier and junior Daniel Love, came in second place as a team behind Morehead State.

Britt, the team’s lead scorer, came in second individually with a six-under total score of 138. His first round was an even par of 72, followed by the best round of the tournament, a six-under 66.

Following close behind, Smith was tied for third place with Morehead’s Logan Liles. Smith finished with a one-under 71 in the first round and a three-under 69 in the second for a total four-under 140.

Robinson came in tied for 11th place with a three-over 75, a two-under 70 and a combined one-over 145 to match Bellarmine’s Patrick Brooks. This was Robinson’s first appearance of the 2023 season.

Falk Schollert finished directly behind Robinson for 13th place with twin one-over 73s to earn a total two-over 146.

Spurrier and Love finished up the Governors’ “A-team” placing 18th with a four-over 148 and 24th with a six-over 150 respectively.

APSU’s second team came in fifth, beating out the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, Tennessee State University and Eastern Illinois University. This second lineup consisted of junior Payne Elkins, redshirt freshman Caleb Brummitt, graduate student Dawson Long and freshman Michael Long.

Elkins was the third and final Governor to place in the top five, leading the second team with a one-under 71 in the first round. This was followed by a two-under 70 in the next round for a combined three-under 141 for his second appearance of the season.

Brummitt showed well in his inaugural collegiate performance after redshirting his freshman year. He finished in a four-way tie for 14th place with a three-over 147. His two rounds were comprised of a three-over 75 and an even par 72.

Both Longs rounded out the “B-team” in their second 2023 appearances. Dawson Long tied with Love at 24th place with a total six-over 150, while Michael Long tied with Eastern Illinois’ Keegan Gowin and Trey Oswald for 34th place and a score of 154.

In the final results, APSU came three points behind Morehead (566) and was followed by Bellarmine University (570), Eastern Kentucky University (588), Austin Peay’s B-team (592), Arkansas Pine-Bluff (602), Tennessee State (614) and Eastern Illinois (619). Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky are fellow members of the ASUN Conference.

The Governors’ fall season will continue and conclude at the Xavier Invitational at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio for a two-day tournament on October 16 and 17.
