Lady Govs’ loss to Morehead State ends 2011 season

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

Win and they were in.

That is what the Lady Govs had to do on the Death Valley trip over the weekend to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament for a second consecutive year.

The Lady Govs were in a must-win game Sunday, Oct. 30, against Morehead State. However, Morehead State (9-7-3 Overall; 4-4-1 OVC) had other plans for the Lady Govs. For the second-straight year, they put an end to the Lady Govs season in Morehead. This time, it was in the regular season finale with a dominant 7-2 win.

“We really played our worst game of the season today,” said head coach Kelley Guth. Morehead jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 21st minute on a header from Brittany Kiracofe.

The Lady Govs cut the Morehead State lead to 2-1 on a penalty kick from Tatiana Ariza in the 29th minute, but the surge from the Lady Govs did not last long.

Morehead State scored a goal in the 37th and 43rd minute for a 4-1 lead headed
into halftime.

Morehead State piled on three more goals for a 7-1 lead. Natalia Ariza added one more goal for the Lady Govs in the 74th minute when she beat two defenders and the keeper for the final score of 7-2.

The Lady Govs were out shot in the game 8-16. They were led by junior Jocelyn Murdoch and sophomore Joceline Quiceno with two shots a piece.

Tatiana Ariza finished the season leading the OVC in almost every offensive category. She is at the top of the stat list in points, points per game, goals, goals per game, assists, assists per game and tied for first in game winning goals.
The Lady Govs finished eighth with a 3-5-1 OVC record (9-8-1 overall). The team was ranked first in attendance, points and goals. They finished second in assists and third in shots. TAS

Lady Govs tied for 5th in OVC

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

When good teams look for game-changing plays at key moments, they turn to big-time players to step up. That is exactly what the Lady Govs did Sunday, Oct. 24, against EIU.

In the 103rd minute of second overtime, Tatiana Ariza blasted home the game winner from just outside the 18-yard box for the 1-0 win.

“That was an exciting finish to the weekend and a crucial win for us to get three points at home,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth said in a press release. “I’m proud of our girls. We’re in a tough situation with our numbers the way they are, and these overtime games are physically challenging for our girls.”

With the win, the Lady Govs (9-6-1 overall, 3-3-1 OVC) stay in the OVC Tournament race as they currently sit in a tie for fifth place with UT Martin.

With a trip to “Death Valley,” the Lady Govs will play EKU, who are in second place, and close out the season with Morehead State Sunday, Oct. 30.

“We have a chance right now to determine our own fate,” Guth said. “That’s where you want to be when the season winds down. I’m proud of our girls and how they played this weekend. Now we’ve got to take care of business in these final two matches.”

Ariza’s goal came from an assist by Emily Perkins when she took the ball at midfield running down the center of the pitch. Perkins then passed off the ball, cutting Ariza on the right side, who then fired it into the back of the net for the game winner.

The Lady Govs defense held strong through the entire match, including in the second overtime as EIU fired four shots during the period.

The Lady Gov keeper Haylee Shoaff saved six shots after the half.

The defensive side held strong in the midfield, as EIU did not get a shot off until the 29th minute.

Ariza led the Lady Govs with her one goal and four shots on goal, including the game winner.

Perkins added an assist and two shots. Claire Pultz added two shots and Jocelyn Murdoch added one shot in the winning efforts.

The goal is Ariza’s 15th of the season. TAS

Victory over Murray State for first OVC win

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

The Lady Govs soccer team opened the first two weeks of the Ohio Valley Conference slate dropping the first three games in the two-week season.

But Sunday, Oct. 3, Tatiana Ariza put an end to that with two goals in the remaining 12 minutes for the first OVC win of the season, 2-1, over Murray State.

The Lady Govs improved to 7-5 overall; 1-2 in the OVC. The score knotted at 1-1, and the game in its dying moments with an attack on the Murray State goal, Joceline Quiceno was taken down inside the penalty box, giving the Lady Govs an opportunity in the 89th minute.

The Lady Govs turned to phenom Ariza, where she blasted into the back of the net for the 2-1 win.

Ariza’s first goal came in the 78th minute when she drew a foul inside the penalty area.

“It was a good match for us against a really good team,” head coach Kelley Guth said in a Sports Information Press Release. “Murray State is a physical team and we’re not any better off health-wise coming out of this game than we were going in. We needed this win to shift some momentum in our direction.”

The two goals by Ariza also snapped her goalless streak of three games.

Not only did they snap a losing streak but Ariza posted her fourth multi-goal game and leads the Lady Govs with 13 goals and she scored in every Lady Govs win this season.

Murray State jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute on a Julie Mooney goal for the 1-0 lead.

“Our team gritted it out at the end,” Guth said. “We gave up the early goal again, and that was disappointing. We played a good second half and showed some resiliency today.”

The Lady Govs will take a break and return to action on Friday, Oct. 14, at Jacksonville State.
“This week off is going to be very important for us,” Guth said. “We’re going to use it trying to get some players healthy and getting ready to play hard down the stretch. Every conference game is a battle and we have to be ready for that.” TAS

Lady Govs fall short again at SEMO

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

The Lady Govs soccer team did not open Ohio Valley Conference conference play this weekend the way they hoped. They lost two straight OVC games at home, first dropping the home opener against SEMO, 1-3, Friday, Sept. 23, and then losing against UT Martin, 0-2, Sunday, Sept. 25.

Statistically, the Lady Govs outplayed UT Martin. They made 12 shots with two on goal. Comparatively, UT Martin made only five shots, but four were on goal and two found the net.

“We had opportunities to finish and we didn’t,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “If you can’t score, you can’t win games. It’s disappointing. We have to take a serious look at what we’re doing inside the penalty area. We have to get back to the team we were during non-conference play.”

Sophomore forward Andy Quiceno led the Lady Govs with three shot attempts, one on goal. Sophomore forward Natalia Ariza added two shot attempts, one on goal.

The Lady Govs top scorer, sophomore forward Tatiana Ariza, was held scoreless for the third consecutive game.

UT Martin was just the second team to shutout the Lady Govs this season.

They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. A Lady Govs’ foul set up the score. UT Martin’s Alyssa Curtis made the header off an assist by Amy Maksimowicz on the ensuing free kick.

They struck again early in the second period. Rosaelia Loza scored on a cross with an assist from Kendyl Wilson.

Both goals were against sophomore goalkeeper Haylee Shoaff. Shoaff had only one save in the game.

“I can’t take anything away from UT Martin,” Lady Govs’ head coach Kelley Guth said “We didn’t play our best game. I thought we played well enough to compete and be in it, but at the end of the day, we didn’t execute. [UT Martin] took advantage of their opportunities and that’s what you have to do to win.”

SEMO scored first in the 10th minute. However, sophomore forward Morgan Zigelsky put away a corner kick from Corey Osborn during the 36th minute of the game.

SEMO stormed back in the 50th minute to take a 2-1 lead, and added their third goal two minutes later.

“At the end of the first half, we had the run of play and then to give up two quick goals the way we did, it hurt us,” Guth said. “I thought we struggled defensively, tonight. We didn’t handle the pressure as well as we could have. We’re going to learn from this.”

Junior midfielder Jocelyn Murdoch led the Lady Govs with five shots, one on goal. Shoaff made four saves in the game.
The Lady Govs will have a week before they return to action on a three game road trip that starts Sunday, Oct. 2, at Murray State. They will not return to Morgan Brothers field until Friday, Oct. 21 when they play SIU Edwardsville. TAS

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

The APSU Lady Govs soccer team finished the last two games of a four game road trip with matches at Lipscomb on Thursday, Sept. 15 and at Xavier Sunday, Sept. 18.

They were in the final tune up before the OVC conference schedule kicks off Friday, Sept. 23.

The Lady Govs (7-3) won in dominating fashion against Lipscomb, 5-0 on Thursday, Sept. 15. However, they dropped the last game against Xavier 1-0 in double-overtime.

Against Lipscomb the Lady Govs used five different players to score in the 5-0 victory.

The Lady Govs got the ball rolling in the seventh minute when Jocelyn Murdoch put away her third goal of the season off a set piece from Tatiana Ariza.

Thirteen minutes later, Emily Kink blasted home the second goal off of a Corey Osborn corner kick in the 20th minute.

“Our team came out very focused and determined to turn things around,” head coach Kelley Guth said in a Sports Information Press Release.

“We did a great job all the way around, front to back. We made some adjustments during the week and the team responded well to them.”

The Lady Govs got on the board again in the 76th minute when Tatiana Ariza, put away her 11th goal of the year past the Lipscomb keeper.

Four minutes later, Andy Quiceno connected with her sister Joceline Quiceno crossing in a pass that found the back of the net for the 4-0 lead.

Freshman Bianca Melito found stride in the 89th minute for the final goal of the game.

The Lady Govs allowed only four Lipscomb shots, one on goal.

The derby Sunday, Sept. 14 was the first time the Lady Govs have played against Xavier and will go down as a 1-0 loss in double overtime.

The game was the first extra-time game of the season and it is the first time since Oct. 15, 2010 they have been shut out ending a 16-match streak with a goal.

The Lady Govs surrender the only goal in Xavier in the first minute of the second, extra -time, golden-goal period.

The Lady Govs were led by Emily Perkins with three shots one on goal. Ariza, Murdoch and Quiceno all had one shot on goal.

They will return to action 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 at home, hosting Southeast Missouri. TAS

Lady Govs hustle at Port City Classic

» By ANTHONY SHINGLER – ashingler@my.apsu.edu

The APSU Lady Govs began the season’s longest road trip with the Port City Classic in Mobile Ala. splitting the two games in the tournament.

The Lady Govs (5-2) played a rematch Friday, Sept. 9, against Troy, and avenged last season’s first lost 2-1. The Lady Govs offense was on display blasting 18 shots to Troy’s 11, while firing 12 total shots in the previous two games before the win over Troy.

Tatiana Ariza led the Lady Govs with five shots, while Emily Perkins and Morgan Zigelsky had three shots each. “Troy is a good team and very controlled with the ball,” Kelley Guth said in a Sports Information Press Release.

“They play possession soccer. It came down to us creating opportunities. This is an exciting win for us after what happened against Troy last year.”

Ariza got the Lady Govs on the board first, blasting a shot into the net for her 10th goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a touch pass from Morgan Zigelsky. Haylee Shoaff saved three Troy shots on goal, taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second-half opened with an offensive explosion from Troy, but Andy Quiceno defensive stop in the midfield sparked a Lady Gov counter attack with a pass to Emily Perkins.

Perkins then found herself in a one-on-one situation with the Trojan goal keeper and finished off the attack with her sixth goal of the season in the 57th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Troy got on the board in the 89th minute cutting the Lady Gov lead 2-1.

“This was the most consistent we played all season,” Guth said. “Perkins did a great job today being our target. She held the ball well and helped us maintain tempo.”

The Lady Govs played the second game in the Port City Classic Sunday dropping their second game of the 2011 campaign 2-1.

The Lady Govs opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Jocelyn Murdoch blasted a header into the net for the early lead.

The corner kick was set up by a shot from Ariza that sent Emily Kink to the corner kicker.

South Alabama equalized the game in the 35th minute on a shot that ricocheted off the post past. Haylee Shoaff tying the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.

It was a pretty even match I thought,” Guth said. “It went back and forth several times. We scored first and then they countered off a defensive breakdown. They got in again in the second half. Our defense just didn’t do what they needed to do today.”

With the score still tied 1-1 heading into the dying minutes of the match South Alabama pushed the field with a quick throw in that found Brandi Smith for the game winner in the 82nd minute.

Haylee Shoaff made seven saves in goal against South Alabama. Ariza, Murdoch and Perkins were each All-Tournament Selections.

The Lady Govs return to action in the second half of their road trip Thursday, Sept. 15, at Lipscomb University.
They will then travel Sunday, Sept. 18, to Cincinnati to face off against Xavier University Musketeers. TAS
