The Lady Govs soccer team hosted the final two home games of the season at Morgan Brothers Soccer field this past weekend. Friday, Oct. 23, the Lady Govs were in action against conference rival Murray State, while Sunday, Oct. 25, the women took on the University of Tennessee at Martin.

In the chill of mid-October, the Lady Govs faced off against the Racers of Murray State. The game appeared promising, with the Lady Govs having multiple chances to score. However, Murray State defender Veronika Pribyslavska scored the only goal with only eight minutes remaining in the game. Nicole Evans picked up the assist. APSU committed 13 fouls, while Murray State committed eight. Murray State led the game in shots (13-3) and corner kicks (4-1). Murray State goal keeper Tara Isbell had three saves and picked up the clean sheet, while Lady Govs’ goal keeper Carly Newman also had three saves in the game.

The Lady Govs hosted the final home game Sunday, Oct. 25, against the visiting Skyhawks of Tennessee Martin. Tennessee Martin came into the game second in the OVC standings. Martin drew first blood with the goal of Melissa Govea in the ninth minute of the game. When Govea stole the attempted clearance of APSU inside the box and sunk the shot. UT Martin never looked back from that point with eight shots, and a corner kick in the first half. The Lady Govs had 5 shots, and goal keeper Carly Newman gained three saves, while allowing a goal. The Lady Govs changed goal keepers at the half, sending Mackenzie Ladd in for Newman. UT Martin turned on the heat in the second half with 12 shots, four corners and a penalty kick. Stephanie Silica hit the net with her penalty kick in the 71st minute, and Danielle Rogers headed in a shot off the assist from Sophie Cox in the 73rd minute. The Lady Govs added three more shots with no luck, and Mackenzie Ladd picked up five saves in the game. UT Martin had 10 fouls in the game, to APSU’s six. Lady Govs continue losing streak

Lady Govs continue losing streak

3987397572_919ea1648e_mAPSU fell victim to an early goal in a 1-0 loss at Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 4, in Ohio Valley Conference action.

The game-winner came in the fourth minute, following a pair of corner kicks by the Panthers. The Lady Govs defended the first corner service, but EIU’s Kristin Germann founded a hole off the second service. Her header went right of center and into the back of the net for the game’s only goal.

There were only 15 shots combined throughout the match, as both teams focused on defending the attacking third. In fact, three of APSU’s six shots came from the midfield. Freshman Danielle Roos returned to action, firing two shots, while junior Samantha Northrup had one shot. Senior Lauren Moon came off the bench to put both of her shots on goal.

“The game was pretty even, back and forth, all the way,” Lady Govs head coach Kelley Guth said. “We had a defensive breakdown on the early corner kick and gave up that goal. We had a couple of scoring opportunities, but couldn’t convert.”

After playing the OVC-opening weekend with only one available substitution, the Lady Govs played five players off the bench in the contest. However, the match was the third-straight without a goal, following the early score against Morehead State in the conference opener. The Lady Govs continue its four-game road trip with a 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, at Jacksonville State.

The Lady Govs appeared to hold off the offensive flurry from Morehead State, until just under ten minutes were remaining in regulation, when Eagles’ forward Devan Jordan slipped a shot past APSU goalkeeper, Carley Newman, tying the score 1-1.

The Lady Govs, who were playing with only 12 players, gave up the winning goal to Morehead State in the 88th minute.

Lady Govs lose fourth straight, 4-3

Lady Govs lose fourth straight, 4-3

By Anthony Shingler | Assistant Sports Editor

The battered and bruised Lady Govs, who put on a come-from-behind effort, fell short dropping a 4-3 contest at Chattanooga, on Sunday, Sept 20. The Lady Govs fell to 1-7-1, while Chattanooga Lady Mocs remain undefeated at 5-0 overall.

The Lady Govs open the Ohio Valley Conference Friday, Sept. 25. They have not put up any points on the scoreboard since the home-opener against Cumberland University, 2-0.

With the team suffering from a laundry list of injuries, Head Coach Kelley Guth had available 13 of the 23 players on the official roster.

Junior Kellie Cannon broke open the scoring drought scoring two goals in the match, with two games after returning from what was thought to be a season-ending contusion on her liver.

Cannon scored the first goal of the contest in the 10th minute off her own rebound, giving the Lady Govs an early lead.  Chattanooga showed why they are undefeated by crossing the ball into the 20 yard box, and Donna-Key Henry found the back of the net in the 33rd minute to tie the score 1-1 going into halftime.

The second half opened  with a quick goal from Chattanooga’s Kelly Downs, scoring at 45:59 point to take an early lead.

Chattanooga would extend the lead by netting two goals in a 15-minute span, pushing the lead to 4-1 with a half an hour left in the match.

“We had a breakdown in the second half, but we showed some resiliency in fighting our way back. Being able to come out and battle like we did was good to see. That’s the kind of effort we need to be showing every day,” Guth said, according to Sports Information.

The Lady Govs kept the pressure on Chattanooga, scoring off a deflection from Samantha Northrup in the 76th minute to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Lady Govs kept the pressure on Chattanooga in the offensive third of the field, forcing a penalty kick that resulted in Cannon’s second goal to cut the finish the match at 4-3.

“We’re not happy with the result,” Guth said. “We still have a really short bench and to have Kellie back is great because we thought we had lost her for the season. It was good to be able to generate some scoring opportunities.”

“We still have to address the breakdowns in our defensive, but today we saw that if we just go after it, good things will happen,” Guth said.

The Lady Govs return to Morgan Brothers Field Friday, Sept. 25, to hosting Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
