It’s not how you start, but how you finish.

In a double-overtime thriller against Southern Utah Saturday night, Austin Peay State University trailed 42-45 when quarterback Mike DiLiello connected with Trey Goodman for the 8-yard quick slant walk-off touchdown for the 48-45 victory in Cedar City, Utah.

This wasn’t the first time that the Govs were down, but not out during Saturday’s game.

The Govs faced a 21-point deficit — the largest point deficit since the season opener against Southern Illinois — with just 37 minutes left in regulation play. It was the next three consecutive APSU possessions where touchdowns were scored taking away the deficit in just around 12 minutes.

DiLiello was the first to chip away at the deficit by running the yard for the touchdown. Jevon Jackson ran for another touchdown and Trey Goodman’s 54-yard touchdown pass to Tre Shackelford cleared away the deficit for the Govs.

While the offense made good in gametime, the defense gave up play with just 1:02 left in the fourth quarter where the Thunderbird’s Joshua Acord completed a 16-yard pass from Justin Miller to tie the game up 42-42.

In the first overtime, the Govs and Thunderbirds kept each other at bay leading both teams into second overtime. Tyler Graham made a 40-yard field goal giving the Thunderbirds the 42-45 lead. APSU responded quickly with the DiLiello/Goodman walk-off touchdown giving the Govs a 48-45 victory.

This is the Govs fifth straight win. They look to take home their sixth win, third win at home, against University of Northern Alabama this Saturday during APSU homecoming. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. in Fortera Stadium. Espn+ and Govs Sports Network will have live coverage of Saturday’s game.
