With those words, Govs went on the road to fall to the Western Illinois Leathernecks 77-72 at Western Hall Sunday, Dec.2.

The Govs (4-4) made 13 triples in the contest, led by Brianah Ferby season-high 19 points.

Senior Keisha Gregory got into foul trouble early in the game.

Luckily freshman Kasey Kidwell helped out after coming back from an injury. Govs outscored the Leathernecks in the first quarter 22-9, but the Leathernecks came out firing in the second.

Kidwell knocked down two triples, but the Leathernecks came back to lead by two at the break.

The Govs did not ease up, with a  Knowles three-pointer putting the Govs back up by one, 51-50.

Arielle Gonzalez-Varner also came to life in the second half,  finishing with a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds).

The Govs continually made plays on defense to force turnovers.

“We did not do a good job on the boards”, Head Coach Dave Midlick said to letsgopeay.com.

Late in the third quarter, Western Illinois hit back-to-back threes and after a couple free-throws led by six going to the fourth.

Gregory, unfortunately, fouled out early in the fourth, but the Govs did not let Western Illinois pull away.

However, the refs called Gonzalez-Varner for an illegal screen on the next possession and the Leathernecks finished the game at the line.

“I think we played against a different type of defense today and were still able to get great shots. I won’t fault that and the ladies I had shooting the basketball, well I’ll take that all day,” Midlick said to letsgopeay.com.

The Govs will continue on the road and take on Illinois State, 7 p.m., Tuesday and will be back at home court Sunday, Dec. 9 against Alabama A&M.
