Govs start OVC 2-0 for 4th consecutive season

The hardwood Govs (5-4 overall, 2-0 OVC) opened their Ohio Valley Conference schedule up with a clean sweep over SEMO, Thursday, Dec. 2, and EIU, Saturday, Dec. 4, to move to 2-0 in conference opening weekend.

Down 13, after two free throws from Tyler Laser to push the EIU lead to 58-45 with 8:00 minutes remaining in regulation.

Tyshwan Edmondson would spark a comeback, scoring 13 of his 33 points in the final eight minutes to push the game into overtime.

EIU had a chance to hit the game winner when Jeremy Granger grabbed a rebound with 33 seconds remaining and took a shot with three ticks remaining but missed the jumper.

In the extra period, EIU got on the board first on a layup by Granger. The Govs would respond with a 3-pointer by Caleb Brown.

The Govs would go up by three with 1:47 seconds remaining on a three-point play by John Fraley on a put back off a 3-point attempt from Caleb Brown to take a 73-69 lead.

Tyler Laser cut the Gov lead to 75-73 when he sank a pair of free throws.

The Govs led by as many of nine points in the first half on two free throws by Justin Blake, 25-16.

The Govs were led by Edmondson’s double-double of 33 points on 10-of-25 shooting 6-of-10 from 3-point range and 10 rebounds where seven of which came on the offensive side. 


Edmondson’s 30-point effort is the first for the Govs since Drake Reed had 35 points on Feb 9, 2009 when the Govs played UT Martin.

Anthony Campbell added 17 points while Fraley added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds respectively.

In Thursday’s, Dec. 2, match up at SEMO the Govs came away with a 78-60 win behind four double digit scorers as Campbell led the way with 19 points. Edmondson had 14 points, while Brown and Fraley added 13 points each. After leading 41-26 at halftime, the game looked all but over. But SEMO would race back to come within one point 51-50 on a three-point play by Anthony Allison with 9:48 left after a foul by Campbell.

The Govs would storm back out to a double-digit 72-60 lead on a 3-pointer from Edmonson with 1:41 left in the game.

The Govs will return home for a game against Fontbonne on Saturday, Dec. 11, with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. TAS
