I look forward to seeing the movie 2012? this weekend. The CGI looked great. Maybe the story and acting won’t be up to par for everyone but the 6 bucks I’ll be paying for the matinee…. well… I think it will be well worth the price for the big special effects alone.

I think you should start doing more research before you write your columns. The Maya never predicted the end of the world. We do not have enough information on their long-count calender to make an informed conclusion about the issue. Most of what the Mayans wrote was destroyed by the invading Spanish or lost to time. Nostradamus actually gives predictions regarding dates past 2300. You have got to do a little but more than watch the History channel. The “Doomsday” set-up is just one of many 2012 rackets ( I do not ascribe to any myself). There’s also the one where Atlantis rises from the ocean, then there is mass enlightenment, attainment of light bodies etc. You have got to do a little bit more than just refer to people as “Crazies”. We get it, you don’t believe it but, there is just no reason to demean people.

No things may not happen like that in the movie, but Natural Hazards are a real problem and to often people believe that we can prevent them, or that it won’t happen to me. We live on a very active planet. For more answers on these issues the paper should talk to Dr. Sirk. He teaches a Natural Hazards class, which is a geography course. It would be nice to see what he thinks, or ask Dr. Diebert what he thinks of magnetic reversals. Dr. Diebert is a geologist. I do believe that a geologist was the hero in this movie. I have taken courses from both of these men and I have much respect for them. They are both located in the Geo-science department in the McCord Blg.
