The APSU Lady Govs opened their 2009 season with a 2-0 win over the visiting Lady Bulldogs of Cumberland University for their first win of the 2009 campaign.
The Lady Govs dominated the entire match, firing 36 shots with 15 of those on goal. The Lady Bulldogs did not have a shot the entire game and played with only 10 players for much of the match because of injuries and with no substitutes to replace the injured players.
“I am happy with the result, and we got the win,” said Coach Kelly Guth. “This is our first opportunity to play against a team where we dominated the flow of the game and we wanted to focus on countering and transition the opportunities but I am happy with the win.”
The Lady Govs got on the board when Laurena Robinson headed a cross in from Monique Wong in the 17 minute. Wong was not finished with her offensive flurry, and she scored on an assist from Lauren Moon.
Although the Lady Govs dominated the entire game, they failed to score in the second half while having 19 shots for the half. “I am frustrated with our lack of production offensive ability,” said Guth. “Our quality of shots were not where they needed to be.”
The Lady Govs defender Jocelyn Murdoch, who was injured at practice, will be out for an undetermined amount of time. “Jocelyn is recovering from a fracture to the knee,” said Guth. When asked a timetable for her return, Guth said, “We do not know at this point.”
The Lady Govs will play host to University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday at Morgan Brothers Field with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
